The land at this corner has been in continuous private ownership since 1754, when François Caüe purchased the entire empty square. In 1780–1781, Gabriel Peyroux de la Roche Molive contracted builder Maurice Milon to dismantle his Bayou Road house and rebuild it here - the first structure on this square, constructed in the briquette-entre-poteaux tradition. The house survived both the Great Fire of 1788 and the second fire of 1794 that together destroyed most of French colonial New Orleans - one of only a handful of pre-fire structures still standing in the French Quarter today. It remained in the Peyroux family until 1850.
