New Orleans Jazz Museum®

In 1962, Tennessee Williams purchased 1014 Dumaine Street — the first home he ever owned in New Orleans — on the block between Burgundy and North Rampart. He considered New Orleans his spiritual home and lived in the second-floor apartment off and on for twenty-one years, until his death in 1983, working on his autobiography from the study overlooking the street.

The presence of Williams on this block, in the same years the jazz museum stood just steps away at 1017 Dumaine, captures something essential about this street - simultaneously a center of jazz history, an active literary address, and one of the oldest continuously inhabited blocks in New Orleans.
